India, one of the most diverse countries in the world. Every state in this country has a different culture, rituals, local languages & cuisines. Based on climate, cultures & habits, every state has its own local drinks too. Some drinks are popular only in that particular locality whereas some drinks are widely accepted beyond its state border. So this list of popular Indian drinks definitely will be long. In some parts of India, Kokum sharbat (Maharastra, Karnataka & Goa) is popular whereas in some part of this country wood apple (Indian bael) sharbat (Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, UP) is very popular.
Popular Indian drinks
1. Chai or tea
No doubt tea is the most popular drink in India and it is popular across the country. India has hundreds of years long tradition of drinking tea. People offers tea whenever guests come to their home. You can see plenty of tea stalls in all big or small Indian cities.
2. Coffee
Coffee is not as popular as tea. But during winter or rain, many people prefer coffee over tea. Indian coffee is considered as the finest quality coffee in the world. Indian states Karnataka & Kerala are major producers of coffee. Coffee sellers and/or stalls are widely visible in railway stations, market areas, office areas in major cities.
3. Nimbu pani or lemon water
It is a local drink and one of the popular Indian drinks in many states (like Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand, Punjab etc) in Northern India. Though it is also very much popular in some south Indian states. You can see many street vendors are selling nimbu pani during summer. It is a very quick refreshing beverage and protect our body from dehydration.
4. Nariyal pani or Coconut water
This is a natural mineral water, it contains many nutrients value and protect our body from several diseases. It is not only healthy but also tasty too. In the south, it is widely available and the price is also less as compare to other states. In Indian villages as well as cities, it is one of the most healthy & popular Indian drinks.
5. Lassi
Lassi is made of curd, sugar, salt, black salt etc. It is very effective during summer. It controls our body temperature during the summer season. It has some varieties like sweet lassi or salty lassi. Nowadays flavored lassi are also available in shops. It is very refreshing and super delicious. This is my favorite and one of the most popular Indian drinks.
6. Thandai
Thandai is popular in the Northern states of India. People who are not so familiar often get confused with lassi and thandai. They feel these two are similar. But it is not true. Lassi is made of curd whereas thandai is made of full cream milk. Safron, sugar & some other spices are added with full cream milk to make thandai. In Benaras is it very famous. In Rajasthan, people also prefer this drink.
7. Chaas or butter milk
Chaas is basically butter milk. Chaas is known in different names in different states. It is more diluted and sugar less drink. It is very easy to make. Many people just take curd in a bottle, pour water and add some available spices, chili, coriander leaves and shake and your drink is ready. In villages, people often make chaas at home during summer and enjoy while having their meal.
8. Sattu sharbat
This drink is popular in Bihar, East UP, Jharkhand. This is a very heavy drink. Once you drink a glass of sattu sharbat then it will give you the energy to work till lunch. You can simply skip your breakfast. 🙂 So people who do more physical works prefer this drink in the morning.
9. Aam panna
Aam panna or green mango drink are best in summer. It will help you to kill heat and control body temperature during summer. People burn green mango partially in fire and take pulp in water, add sugar salt, spices to make aam panna.
10. Ganne ka ras / Sugar cane juice
Sugar cane juice is very popular in India. Lemon, black salt & pudina (mint) are added in sugar cane juice. It is so tasty and unbeatable during the summer. This one of the very popular Indian drinks.
