You must have heard about North Indian dal tadka (Punjabi style) and may have tried that also. But did you ever tried tadka dal (Bengali style)? Confused? Yes, it is also a popular dish is Bengal (also in Bihar too). Tadka dal recipe is spicy & very delicious dish too.
If you are visiting this page for Punjabi dal tadka then you are at a wrong page. It is a totally different item but you may try as it is dal made a spicy dish like tadka dal.
Tadka dal recipe – Bengali style
Preparation time : 6 hours
Cooking time : 30 minutes
Serves : 4
Ingredients
- Whole moong dal – 1 cup
- Chana dal / Bengal gram – 1/2 cup
- Red kidney beans/rajma – 1 tbsp
- Tomatoes – 2 large size (chopped)
- Onion – 2 medium size (finely chopped)
- Ginger paste – 2 tsp
- Garlic paste – 1 tsp (4-5 cloves)
- Cumin seeds powder – 1 tsp
- Coriander powder – 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
- Garam masala – 1 tsp
- Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
- Green chillies – 2 (chopped)
- Salt – according to taste
- Oil – 2 tbsp
- Coriander leaves – chopped (for garnishing)
- Fresh cream – 2 tsp (for garnishing) – optional
- Ghee – 2 tsp
Method
- Soak red kidney beans in water for 6 hours (overnight)
- Soak whole moong dal & chana dal in water for 2 hours
- Heat a pan and add oil
- Now add chopped onion and fry for 3 minutes and add ginger garlic paste too
- Add all spices (cumin, coriander, turmeric, red chilli powder) & green chillies and cook for another 2 minutes
- Add finely chopped tomatoes in other spices and make gravy thicker & cook well
- Add all lentils and mix well and cook for 7-8 minutes and add salt according to taste
- Add 3 cup water (add more water if needed) and mix well
- Cover the cooking pot and cook on low flame for 10-12 minutes
- Add garam masala & ghee and cook well till gravy becomes thicker
- Switch off flame and garnish with coriander leaves & fresh cream
- Serve hot with roti, poori & paratha
Additional tips
⇒ You can make tomato puree instead of chopped tomatoes. Tomato puree will make better gravy. To make tomato puree, boil tomatoes in a pot and let those be cool and then remove skin. Blend those tomatoes in a mixer grinder.
⇒ If you think that lentils (specially rajma) did not soak in water for enough time or lentils are still hard after soaking water then pressure cook lentils and then use.
⇒ Fresh cream is optional so you can skip that ingredient to add
⇒ If you like non-veg then you can add scrambled eggs or chicken (fried & grated) in step 8 and follow other steps as it is said.
